Two people are responsible for Gwar
- Hunter Jackson, the artist who envisioned Gwar as a group of costumed intergalactic wrestlers called Scumdogs of the Universe, and
- Dave Brockie, who wanted to to borrow those costumes for his band to wear while playing an opening set for that same band (Death Piggie)
